BOGUE CHITTO, Miss. (AP) - State officers are investigating a shooting that wounded a Lincoln County man as sheriff’s deputies tried to serve felony warrants on him.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Warren Strain says Friday the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is looking into the case because it’s a shooting that involves law-enforcement officers.

Strain says gunfire was exchanged Thursday between deputies and 40-year-old Christopher L. Hamilton, of Bogue Chitto.

Sheriff Steve Rushing says deputies were trying to arrest Hamilton on a felony child abuse indictment and a charge of gun possession by a convicted felon. The previous felony conviction was from Texas, but Rushing didn’t immediately have details.

Rushing says Hamilton was being treated at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, and he didn’t know whether Hamilton has an attorney.

No deputies were injured.
