CODY, Wyo. (AP) - The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is investigating after six elk were poached north of Hyattville.

Greybull game warden Bill Robertson says the elk found in the Spiney Point area of Trapper Canyon were shot with a high-caliber weapon and left to waste. Evidence in the snow indicated that several other elk were killed but had been removed from the area on ATVs.

Robertson says he thinks multiple hunters were at the scene as they approached the elk, and perhaps low lying clouds obscured their vision. The shooters did not follow through by checking to see what had been hit, but instead picked out another target and shot it as well.

Investigators think the elk were shot the day after Thanksgiving.
