OCALA, Fla. (AP) - The holidays are a lot brighter for some families in the Ocala area, thanks to a random grocery giveaway sponsored by a local church.

Meadowbrook Church members went to seven supermarkets Saturday and waited for randomly selected people to finish their shopping before offering to pay their bill.

Volunteer Dan Hirschy tells the Ocala Star-Banner (http://bit.ly/1PMlnB5 ) the church raised $10,000 for the Great Grocery Giveaway. They simply wished shoppers a “blessed Christmas” and paid the tab.

Sorena Kendrick was among the lucky shoppers. She says she was shopping to make dinner for her mother who’d recently suffered a stroke. She called the program a true blessing.

But church volunteer Jerry Rodeheaver says they are the ones who felt blessed, adding the look on the shoppers’ faces was very rewarding.
