PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Prosecutors say an ex-employee of Philadelphia’s police impound lot forged documents and ignored rules to take ownership of ATVs that were supposed to be auctioned off, scrapped or kept in department custody.

Sharon Hammitt, a 25-year department employee, and her husband John Hammitt were arrested Tuesday on charges of theft, forgery, tampering with public records and other offenses.

The Philadelphia District Attorney’s office says the couple kept two ATVs but drew up paperwork showing the impound lot had sent one to the Philadelphia Parking Authority for auction and another to a scrap company.

Prosecutors say the couple also never got a required court order to take back their ATV after it wound up in police custody.

Sharon Hammitt resigned in December. Information on the Hammitts’ lawyer wasn’t immediately available.
