MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Authorities say a Vermont State Police cruiser and two other vehicles were hit by a tractor trailer that jackknifed in slippery conditions on Interstate 89 in Montpelier, closing the northbound lanes for two hours.

The truck driver was taken to the hospital with back pain.

State police say a trooper responding to a crash was placing roadside flares on the road on Tuesday when he said a tractor trailer approached at a high rate of speed. As the tractor jackknifed the trooper jumped over the guardrail to avoid being hit.

The cruiser, which was parked in the breakdown lane with its emergency lights on, was struck and extensively damaged. The trailer then hit two other vehicles.

Police suspect that speed and road conditions contributed to the crash.
