FLINT, Mich. (AP) - Flint-area school officials say about 1,300 preschool students are getting bottled water instead of water from the city’s troubled municipal system.

The Flint Journal reports (http://bit.ly/16zjGTf ) Wednesday the Genesee Intermediate School District has been distributing bottled water to Head Start students since last week. It stopped using city water after the Michigan Department of Human Services recommended bottled water or medical advice for the very young and others.

Flint’s system last month was in violation of the Safe Drinking Water Act because of high levels of a disinfectant byproduct.

City officials said Tuesday the water meets all acceptable guidelines.

Flint gets water from the Flint River, but residents complain about the smell, taste and appearance. Flint cut ties last year with Detroit’s system to build a line to Lake Huron.
