CANTON, Ohio (AP) - Law enforcement officers say a northeast Ohio man believed to have killed his estranged wife’s boyfriend led police on a slow-speed chase and then negotiated his surrender for five hours before committing suicide.

The Times-Reporter newspaper (http://bit.ly/1EG24TG ) reports that 34-year-old Matthew Thompson killed himself with a shotgun Tuesday after officers fired a tear gas canister into his truck. Tuscarawas County Sheriff Walt Wilson told the newspaper that Thompson had earlier slain 42-year-old Anthony Shields at a bar south of Canton where Shields worked. Authorities were alerted after Thompson called his estranged wife.

Thompson’s truck was spotted around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday and a short, low-speed pursuit ensued that ended in Holmes County. The Holmes County sheriff told the newspaper tear gas was fired when negotiations with Thompson broke down.
