PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Stefan Pryor, Gov. Gina Raimondo’s nominee as Rhode Island’s first commerce secretary, has won unanimous approval from a state Senate committee.

The Providence Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1uX0Xq8) after former colleagues from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut and representatives from two local Chambers of Commerce spoke in his favor.

Pryor praised the General Assembly for its 2013 steps to restructure how Rhode Island works to improve its economy. Still, he said poverty and unemployment in Rhode Island are too high.

The Senate is expected to take up Pryor’s nomination in coming days.
