NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - A sailor wounded in a police shooting is suing the city of Norfolk and the officer.

Jasmine Glespie’s lawsuit says the officer used excessive force and was negligent. She’s seeking $5.3 million in damages.

WAVY-TV (http://bit.ly/1zeHEOp ) reports that Glespie filed the lawsuit last month in Norfolk Circuit Court. A hearing is set for April 16.

Norfolk City Councilman Andy Protogyrou tells WAVY that lawsuits against the city are going to happen. He says it’s important to let the process play out.

Glespie was shot on Aug. 3, 2014, as police were responding to a disturbance. Prosecutors have said she hit a woman as she was driving away from the scene and refused an officer’s orders to stop.

She later pleaded guilty to assault and battery and driving under the influence.
