RENO, Nev. (AP) - Police say a 26-year-old man killed in a crash near a south Reno shopping mall was racing another driver before he struck a curb in the median and was ejected from his car.

Police say Travis Roberson of Reno was not wearing a seatbelt when he was thrown from the car about 1:10 a.m. Sunday.

Officer Tim Broadway said Tuesday that two vehicles were racing illegally at a high rate of speed on South Virginia Street. Detectives are continuing to investigate and have released no other details.

Roberson’s car bounced off the curb and ran into a large boulder that serves as a directional sign for the Super 8 Motel parking lot across from Meadowood Mall.

Broadway says a 16-year-old passenger who was wearing a seatbelt suffered only minor injuries.
