BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) - Illinois Wesleyan University athletic director Dennis Bridges is retiring after more than 30 years on the job and nearly a half century after he began coaching at the school.

The Bloomington school announced Tuesday the 75-year-old Bridges will retire when his current contract ends on July 31.

Bridges’ association with the university began when he enrolled as a freshman in 1957. He was a star player on the basketball, football and baseball teams. He graduated in 1961 and returned to the school three years later as a coach.

Bridges was the head basketball coach for 36 years. He took the team to the Division III national title in 1997 and his 667 wins puts him at number five among all Division III coaches.
