BOZEMAN, Mont. (AP) - Utah assistant J.J. Riley has been named the women’s volleyball coach at Montana State University.

MSU athletic director Peter Fields says Riley impressed interviewers with his thoughts on building a program and developing student-athletes and the way he connected with the team.

Riley was an assistant at Utah for the past three years, where he worked primarily with setters, defensive specialists and outside hitters. He played setter at Pepperdine and earned All-America honors after helping the Waves to the NCAA national championship match.

He has served as an assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s volleyball teams at Pepperdine, and for two years as a men’s assistant at USC before joining the Utes.

This fall, Utah posted six wins over Top 20 teams, including a win over second-ranked Washington.

Riley takes over for Kyle Weindel, whose contract wasn’t renewed after the 2014 season.
