LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - A retired Louisville pilot and investor is giving $6.3 million to the University of Louisville School of Music for its jazz studies program.

The university said Tuesday it is the largest planned financial gift in the School of Music’s 82-year history.

The donation from Max Baumgardner will create the Max Baumgardner Endowed Fund for Excellence in Jazz Studies and support faculty positions, student scholarship and additional programming.

Baumgardner’s total planned gift is $12.6 million, with the remaining $6.3 million going to U of L athletics in part to support student academic resources.

Baumgardner attended U of L before joining U.S. Naval Aviation. Baumgardner said in a release from the school he is “sort of a fanatic” for music.
