LEXINGTON, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina authorities are accusing a 43-year-old Leesville man of attempted murder after he set his house on fire, allegedly to kill a woman still in his bed.

Lexington County Sheriff Lewis McCarty says James Poole Jr. tried to kill a 47-year-old woman by setting fire to a bed at the man’s home near Leesville. Multiple media reported that Poole ordered the woman to get out of the bed and then set fire to it before the woman moved.

The woman escaped without serious injury.

Poole is charged with attempted murder and third-degree arson. He is being held without bond after a county magistrate denied bond Saturday.

The fire completely destroyed Poole’s home.
