RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. (AP) - Gov. Pat McCrory says the legislature needs to act early this year to refresh North Carolina’s economic incentives offerings because he lacks tools needed when pitching North Carolina to company executives.

McCrory told a new year’s business economic forum Monday he wants lawmakers to develop a “strategic incentive program” with changes “in a matter of weeks” if the state wants recent job announcements to continue. The legislative session isn’t expected to begin in earnest until Jan. 28.

McCrory and then-Commerce Secretary Sharon Decker last summer unsuccessfully sought from the General Assembly more funds for the Job Development Investment Grant program and for a new initiative to help rural areas land big companies.

The governor told reporters afterward, at a minimum, a bill is needed for the cash-strapped investment grant program.
