HARRISON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Officials say a fire that apparently started from cooking forced residents of a 12-unit suburban Detroit apartment complex out into the cold and left five people injured.

The fire was reported early Monday in an apartment at the Brittany Park complex in Macomb County’s Harrison Township, about 20 miles northeast of Detroit. At least three of those injured suffered from smoke inhalation and one had frostbite.

Fire crews and police officers used ladders to help rescue several residents from the building’s second floor. Several area departments assisted.
