AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Officials say several factors like busy holiday schedules and the cold and flu season are taking a toll on the blood supply in Central Texas.

KVUE-TV (https://bit.ly/1zN1Lzq ) reports the Blood and Tissue Center of Central Texas says the need for blood, especially type O blood, remains constant. The center is asking for donations and is giving away several free items, such as T-shirts, starting Monday morning in honor of National Donor Month.

To donate blood, an individual must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 115 pounds and be in good health. A photo ID is also required.
