CASCADE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - A bill signed by Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder is letting Kent County move forward with creating a regional airport authority to run Gerald R. Ford International Airport outside Grand Rapids.

A news release from Snyder’s office says the governor signed the legislation Tuesday. It allows Kent County to form the airport authority to assume jurisdiction of airports owned or operated by municipalities.

Ford Airport board of directors chair Roger Morgan has said the bill would transfer airport operation from the county to the new authority. He told a state House committee in April that having an authority would give the airport more flexibility.

Snyder said in the news release that forming the airport authority would allow for attracting more talent and tourists to the area.
