INDEPENDENCE, La. (AP) - Former longtime Independence Mayor Phillip Domiano has been hospitalized after an accident on his farm.

Tangipahoa Parish Councilman Carlo Bruno tells The Advocate (http://bit.ly/1MaOAmL ) Domiano suffered severe injuries in an accident Monday and is hospitalized at North Oaks Medical Center.

Family told Mayor Michael Raguso and Bruno that Domiano stepped out of his vehicle, mistakenly thinking it was in neutral, and the vehicle backed over him sometime between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Bruno said Domiano was in the hospital’s intensive care unit, suffering from broken bones and internal injuries.

A spokeswoman for North Oaks says Domiano is in critical condition.

Domiano served as mayor of Independence for 28 years. He lost a re-election bid in 2008 to current Mayor Michael Raguso.
