NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - A Newport News man faces charges of making and possessing explosives.

Battalion Chief Steve Pincus with the Newport News Fire Department says the charges stem from a search of 24-year-old John C. Elder’s home in May.

Pincus said Wednesday in a news release that the city Fire Marshal’s Office charged Elder on Monday with three counts of creating, possessing or using a bomb or explosive.

The Daily Press (http://bit.ly/1fJzw2d ) says court documents show that investigators recovered two pipe bombs and several other items that could manufacture explosive devices during the May 14 search.
