BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) - Animal care workers say a malnourished and dehydrated 1-month-old foal rescued last week has died.

The Billings Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/1HulEBQ) Help Every Pet of Hardin president Eshan Zaic says her husband found Rio the filly while fishing on the Crow Reservation. Volunteers looked for the mother and couldn’t find her, so the group returned with Animal Care Center veterinarian Mark Francis to rescue the animal.

Zaic says the young horse was tranquilized and rescued, but never had a full good day.

She was fostered to a family that was caring for another orphaned horse and died Monday night. Zaic said the horse had a good life at the end.

Zaic’s organization is starting a fund memorializing Rio that would be used to help large animals and treat serious injuries.
