CARLSBAD, N.M. (AP) - A man accused of fatally shooting a woman in Artesia nearly five years ago has been convicted of second-degree murder.

An Eddy County jury on Wednesday found 27-year-old Dallas Hnulik guilty in the July 2010 shooting death of Brandy Capps.

Authorities say the 32-year-old Capps died of a close-range gunshot wound to the head while sitting in the passenger seat of her car at a home.

Hnulik maintained that the gun accidentally discharged and he was in a relationship with Capps at the time.

He was arrested last year on charges of first-degree murder.

Prosecutors asked jurors to consider second-degree murder with a firearms enhancement, or the lesser charges of voluntary manslaughter and involuntary manslaughter

Hnulik now is facing 16 years of incarceration when he’s sentenced at a later date.
