ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Orlando City says midfielder Brek Shea has had successful surgery to repair a sports hernia.

The team said Thursday that Shea underwent his procedure earlier this week and is expected to return this season for the Lions (6-7-6). Officials say Shea has been “playing with a nagging injury for some time.” He left in the 40th minute of Orlando City’s match against the Colorado Rapids on June 24.

Shea has appeared in 14 games for the Lions this season. Last month he was left off the U.S. national team’s group-stage CONCACAF Gold Cup roster.

Orlando City returns to league play Saturday when it hosts the New York Red Bulls.
