STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) - Police say a Connecticut woman who was supposed to be watching her elderly aunt’s finances gambled them away instead.

Stamford Police say 62-year-old Barbara Pyne, of Bethel, turned herself in Thursday for allegedly stealing $656,000 from her 84-year-old aunt.

Police tell The Stamford Advocate (http://bit.ly/1OatdiX ) that over a five-year period, Pyne spent the money on gambling, lavish trips to Europe and other personal expenses.

Pyne had been given power of attorney by her aunt to oversee the woman’s hospital bills and assisted living expenses.

Sgt. Steven Perrotta says investigators determined that Pyne misappropriated the funds between April 2008 and October 2013.

Pyne is charged with first-degree larceny. She was removed as her aunt’s power of attorney.

Pyne’s attorney says this was a family business transaction that seems to have gone sideways.
