HURRICANE, W.Va. (AP) - A Hurricane man who landed a fatal punch during a dispute with another man has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor battery charge.

William Garmon was sentenced to a suspended prison sentence Thursday after he entered his plea in Kanawha County Circuit Court. Judge Duke Bloom placed Garmon on two years’ probation, according to media reports.

The 29-year-old defendant apologized in court for the punch he threw last September that fatally injured 47-year-old Scott Baria of Poca. He died about one week later.

Prosecutors agreed to drop an involuntary manslaughter charge in exchange for Garmon’s plea to battery.
