NEW YORK (AP) - The prosecutor in the case of the 1979 disappearance of Etan Patz has been chosen as the Republican nominee for Staten Island’s district attorney.

The Staten Island Advance reports (https://bit.ly/1I0jVHf ) Joan Illuzzi will be running against former councilman and Congressman Michael McMahon in November.

They’re running to fill the district attorney’s seat left vacant when Daniel Donovan was elected to the House of Representatives last month.

Illuzzi is currently an attorney in the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. She’ll resign her office to run.

She says she has a stellar record of convictions and has “provided peace and justice to victims and their families.”

Illuzzi was most recently the prosecutor in the disappearance of Patz more than 30 years ago. A mistrial was declared after 18 days of deliberations.
