GONZALES, La. (AP) - The Ascension Parish sheriff is warning residents about a telephone scam in which a caller claiming to be an Ascension Parish deputy demands money to pay a fine. Sheriff Jeff Wiley said in a news release received by The Advocate (http://bit.ly/1cvhI8t) his office has received several reports related to the scam.

Wiley says the victims are told they need to pay a fine or be jailed for 20 days. Victims are then given instructions on how to transfer funds.

The sheriff said his office does not initiate contact with residents by telephone, email, text or social media to request financial information.

He says anyone receiving such a call should refuse to provide personal information.
