HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a Pennsylvania man wanted for attempted homicide has set himself on fire after being pulled over by police on a New York highway and is hospitalized.

The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office says a deputy stopped 31-year-old Darren Desruisseaux (deh-ROO’-soh), of Coatesville, for speeding at around 5 a.m. Friday on Interstate 86 in the village of Horseheads, near the Pennsylvania border 85 miles south of Rochester.

The deputy learned while checking the man’s driver’s license that he was wanted for attempted homicide in Exton, Pennsylvania. Police say when other officers arrived, Desruisseaux locked himself inside his vehicle and used a can of gasoline to set himself on fire.

Officers extinguished the fire and pulled him from the vehicle.

He was listed in guarded condition Tuesday at a hospital.
