RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - The Brazilian football confederation says defensive midfielder Luiz Gustavo will not play in the Copa America because of a knee injury.

Confederation doctor Rodrigo Lasmar says the Wolfsburg player will need surgery to repair a meniscus in his right knee.

Coach Dunga did not immediately announce a replacement for Gustavo.

Brazil has already lost Real Madrid defender Marcelo because of a back injury.

The national team began its preparation on Monday for the continental tournament in Chile. It will play friendlies against Mexico on Sunday in Sao Paulo, and against Honduras on June 10 in Porto Alegre.

The five-time winners will open their Copa America campaign against Peru on June 14.
