A look at what’s happening all around the major leagues today:

___

HELPING HAND

Rangers top prospect Joey Gallo should find himself in a major leaguer uniform sooner than anyone expected. With Adrian Beltre out with a thumb injury, the 21-year-old third baseman is making the jump from Double-A and into the Texas lineup against Jeff Samardzija and the Chicago White Sox. Gallo has nine homers and 31 RBIs in 121 at-bats for Double-A Frisco.

GOING OUT IN STYLE

Pittsburgh’s A.J. Burnett looks to win his sixth straight start when he pitches against the Giants. In his final season, Burnett is winless in his past two outings facing San Francisco but 6-3 overall. He also is 3-0 with a 1.89 ERA in six road starts. Right-hander Chris Heston, who has pitched well for San Francisco in place of the injured Matt Cain, tries to win his third straight start and fourth consecutive decision.

STRUGGLING STARTER

Among active pitchers, LHP Brad Hand (0-1, 4.50) has the worst record in the majors as a starter with at least 20 decisions, according to STATS. He’s 4-18 in 32 career starts with an ERA of 4.45 heading into his start against the Cubs. Hand pitched five shutout innings but received no decision in his only start this year. Kyle Hendricks (1-1, 3.76) is scheduled to start for Chicago.

HEARTY EFFORT

Righty David Hale may be auditioning for a more permanent spot in the Colorado Rockies’ rotation during the second game of a doubleheader against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He’s one of the candidates the team is considering with righty Jordan Lyles sidelined by a left big toe injury. Hale was brought up as the 26th man for a doubleheader May 23 and helped the Rockies to a 5-3 win over San Francisco.

DEBUT TIME

The Mariners are going to call up left-hander Mike Montgomery to make his big league debut against the Yankees in place of injured lefty James Paxton. Seattle acquired the 25-year-old Montgomery from the Rays in March. CC Sabathia pitches for New York. He lost his previous two starts.
