BOSTON (AP) - The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for parts of southern New England for periods of heavy rain on Sunday at the remnants of Tropical Depression Bill pass south of the area.

The heaviest rain is expected from the overnight hours after midnight until Sunday afternoon in southern Connecticut, southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Widespread rain of 1-1/2 to 2 inches is expected, with localized totals up to 3 inches possible.

The rain is expected to begin in southwestern and coastal Connecticut around 2 a.m. Sunday, and around 4 a.m. in Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts including Cape Cod.

Heavy rainfall in a short period of time could lead to flooding in poor drainage areas.

Western Massachusetts and Connecticut could also see thunderstorms from a different weather system on Sunday afternoon and evening.
