MCCOMB, Miss. (AP) - A McComb woman says a hit-and-run driver killed her son, who died just after she ran up to him.

Bonnie Stewart told The Enterprise-Journal (http://bit.ly/1SAZSkI ) that a white truck hit her 33-year-old son, Justin Lander as he stood in a driveway near the shoulder of Mississippi Highway 98 Friday night while she waited to back out onto the highway.

Lander had gone to a bar with a friend and called her for a ride home when the friend wanted to go to another lounge, Stewart said. She said he told her he was calling from a mobile home with a fire out front, so she drove there and then turned around near the driveway.

She was waiting to back out into the highway when the truck hit Lander, she said.

“When they hit my son, it threw him into the road and I heard the truck run over him,” Stewart said.

Stewart says the truck never stopped or even veered.

She put her truck in park and ran to her son.

“He took two gasps and I knew he was dead,” she said. “That was my son, three, four feet away from me and I couldn’t do anything about it except watch the truck drive away.”

When she tried to move Lander, Stewart said, a man who drove up on the scene got out of his car and told her to stop.

“I looked at him and said, ‘Sir, my son is dead.’”

Mississippi First Class Trooper Brandon Fortenberry said the vehicle was not there when officers arrived and the accident is under investigation.

McComb police Lt. Sean Gill says dispatchers told officers to watch for a four-door, white Nissan Titan pickup truck, reportedly traveling east on Highway 98.
