DENVER (AP) - A man is missing after flipping off his inner tube in rapids on the South Platte River.

The Denver Post reports (http://dpo.st/1H0cG0h) that Sheridan police were called to the river around 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Witnesses say the 20-year-old surfaced and went under several times. He was last seen floating in the river a quarter-mile north of Union.

Rescue crews combed the banks of the river. Sheridan Police Sgt. Paul Wszolek says crews stopped looking for him at dark but will return in the morning.

The man was one of four tubers. The others got out of the river.

U.S. Geological Survey hydrologic technician Sue Hartley says recent rains have created some of the highest water levels in 20 years.
