BAY CITY, Mich. (AP) - The Bay County Historical Museum has acquired a 117-year-old U.S. flag that its chief historian says was likely presented to a Michigan regiment returning from fighting in the Spanish-American War.

The Bay City Times (http://bit.ly/1GCbBKH ) reports the museum took possession of the 45-star flag June 15 after it hung for many years at the Bay County Building. Ron Bloomfield, the museum’s director of operations and chief historian, says the flag is among the most significant military items in its collection.

The flag is not on display at the museum, but Bloomfield says he hopes it can go back up if it’s preserved properly. He says getting it in good enough condition could cost thousands of dollars.
