VALDOSTA, Ga. (AP) - A south Georgia man has been arrested and charged with murder in the death of a 2-year-old boy.

Local media report that 31-year-old James Michael Smith of Vadosta was arrested Thursday by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Brooks County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities say Smith called 911 on June 11, and the toddler was found unresponsive at his home. Authorities say Smith was caring for Parker Bledsoe at the time. The child was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

The GBI says an autopsy showed the child died from head trauma.

Smith faces charges of murder, aggravated assault and first-degree cruelty to children. It was not immediately clear whether he had a lawyer who could comment on the charges.
