WINSLOW, Maine (AP) - An Oakland man is in trouble for allegedly sparking a search that tied up 20 emergency responders looking for a lost child who did not exist.

Police say Jacob Collins told a clerk at a convenience store Wednesday that he was looking for his 3-year-old son.

Winslow Police Chief Shawn O’Leary tells the Morning Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1Kfoflk ) that Collins told the clerk he didn’t want police involved, but his story about the missing child was so convincing that the clerk contacted authorities.

Police eventually tracked down Collins but officers quickly determined that he didn’t have a child and no one was missing

Collins is charged with false public alarm or report and refusing to submit to arrest or detention.
