BIDDEFORD, Maine (AP) - A retired Biddeford police officer and his wife have sued the parent company of a Biddeford-based newspaper, its editor and a reporter, after a series of articles about sexual abuse allegations made against the officer 25 years ago.

Norman and Joanne Gaudette filed the defamation suit against Mainely Media LLC, editor Molly Lovell-Keely and reporter Ben Meiklejohn in York County court.

The suit accuses the company and its journalists of falsely reporting that the state attorney general is investigating Gaudette, and of publishing unverifiable statements. The suit says Gaudette has been the subject of a “smear campaign.”

Gaudette was investigated 25 years ago but never criminally charged.

Lovell-Keely and Meiklejohn said in emails to the Portland Press Herald that they “have been advised not to comment.”

The suit seeks unspecified monetary damages.
