OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) - Baltimore County police are identifying three officers who shot and killed an unarmed black man who had threatened to kill himself.

Officers shot 41-year-old Spencer McCain early Thursday in Owings Mills.

On Saturday, police identified the officers by last name. They are Officer Wilkes, a six-year veteran of the department; Officer Besaw, an eight-year veteran of the department; and Officer Stargel, a five-year veteran of the department.

A police spokesman says the department cannot release their first names due to a police union contract. The officers are on administrative leave.

Police Chief Jim Johnson said Thursday that three officers all fired as McCain was in a “defensive position.” Johnson says McCain was holding his arms and body in a manner that suggested he was armed. No weapon was found.
