DETROIT (AP) - A man charged with murder in the deaths of two Detroit children during a high-speed chase with police has made his first appearance in court.

Lorenzo Harris heard the charges in District Court and was returned to jail Saturday. No defense lawyer could be reached for comment. An attorney hasn’t been assigned yet.

A 6-year-old boy and his 3-year-old sister were hit by a Chevrolet Camaro while playing Wednesday. Three other children and a woman were hurt when the car crashed into a porch.

Police say the Camaro driven by Harris reached an average speed of 95 mph during the chase.

Besides second-degree murder, the 29-year-old is charged with fleeing police and other crimes. A hearing to determine if there’s enough evidence is set for July 13.
