KEANSBURG, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say it’s still not clear what caused the death of a kayaker in waters off the central New Jersey coast.

State police say Jairo Esquivel-Prendas, of Summit, was in the Raritan Bay- near a Keansburg beach - when several beachgoers noticed him signaling for help around 8:45 a.m. Saturday.

An air and ground search involving multiple agencies was soon launched, and crews spotted the kayak a short time later. The body of Esquivel-Prendas was found later Saturday morning.

Authorities were still working Sunday to determine what caused Esquivel-Prendas to become distressed. And a cause of death has not been determined.

State police are leading the investigation.
