LOWER BURRELL, Pa. (AP) - Police say the since-fired youth director at a western Pennsylvania church raped and sexually assaulting a 16-year-old church member.

Thirty-one-year-old Daniel Jack, of Lower Burrell, faces a preliminary hearing June 30 on rape and other charges.

Police contend he befriended the girl through Amplify Church in Plum, then forced her to have sex in April before she then had consensual sex on six later occasions.

Defense attorney Robert Mielnicki says “it seems strange” the girl would have consensual sex after being raped, but declined comment when asked whether Jack acknowledged any sexual contact with the girl.

But police say the girl told them she consented to the later sexual contact because she viewed Jack as a mentor and father figure.

A church official said Amplify was cooperating with police and was “surprised and saddened” by the allegations.
