DALLAS (AP) - Houston police say officers fatally shot a man following a chase when he threatened them and a police dog with a knife after the dog grabbed his leg.

Police spokesman John Cannon tells the Houston Chronicle (http://bit.ly/1ANU7vk ) that after the chase ended Wednesday morning, the man was getting in and out of his sport utility vehicle and officers were talking to him to calm him down. Then, at one point, a police dog grabbed the man’s leg. The man then pulled out the knife. Two officers shot him.

Cannon says the officers feared for their safety and for that of their dog.

Police say the chase lasted about 15 minutes. It wasn’t clear yet what sparked the chase.

The officers were not injured.
