FALL RIVER, Mass. (AP) - A New Bedford man charged with fatally beating his girlfriend’s 9-month-old daughter has backed out of a plea deal and instead will undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

The Standard-Times (http://bit.ly/1ePrhkx ) reports that the deal fell apart after Ethen Harrison met with his lawyer during an appearance Tuesday in Superior Court.

Harrison’s lawyer only said “He’s not ready,” without elaborating in explaining why the deal fell apart.

Later Tuesday, the judge ordered Harrison to undergo a 20-day psychiatric evaluation at Bridgewater State Hospital.

Harrison has pleaded not guilty to murder and other charges in the January 2013 death of Ariel Eluziario. Harrison, the girl and her mother lived in the same apartment.

The cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head.
