LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles developer Rick Caruso and his wife Tina are donating $25 million to the medical school at the University of Southern California that improved their daughter’s hearing.

The Los Angeles Times reports (http://lat.ms/1HMyxod) birds chirping in the distance and running water are some of the things Caruso says his 15-year-old daughter Gianna can hear with the internal device doctors at USC’s Keck School of Medicine put in her ear canal last year.

Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery chairman John K. Niparko says the donation will go toward children’s services and research.

The department will be named after the Carusos, as will the Center for Childhood Communications where thousands of kids are treated with cochlear implants each year.
