THIBODAUX, La. (AP) - Thibodaux officials are considering bringing a proposal to the City Council to raise the sales tax by up to a half cent.

Mayor Tommy Eschete tells The Daily Comet (http://bit.ly/1JnR4Nq) the city has faced a persistent budget shortfall in its general account, while utility accounts are mostly self-sustaining through fees.

The city’s 2014 audit presented this week showed an increase of $1.1 million in revenues over 2013, but roughly $1 million came from a wireless tower agreement that will not happen again next year.

During Eschete’s tenure, the city has trimmed the budget, dropping the number of full-time employees and delayed major construction projects.

Eschete said the next step is to come up with a proposal and take it to the City Council, where he hopes to receive unanimous support.
