BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A Birmingham police officer has shot a suspect potentially connected to the deaths of 17-year-old twin brothers in Wylam two years ago.

Multiple news outlets report the shooting occurred shortly before 6 p.m. Thursday as the man tried to flee from police. Authorities say officers were pursuing a suspect when shots were exchanged, and a suspect was hit. He was taken to UAB Hospital with serious injuries. Police Chief A.C. Roper says officers gave clear commands for the man to drop his weapon, but he pointed it at officers.

The 30-year-old suspect was sought in connection with the June 2013 fatal shooting of 17-year-old Jonathan and Jeremi Berry, who were playing video games inside their Wylam home when three men stormed the house and shot them to death.
