PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - The federal Department of Labor is giving a Maine nonprofit group $500,000 to create a job center at Cumberland County Jail.

The money will go to Coastal Counties Workforce Inc. to establish an American Job Center at the jail to help soon-to-be-released inmates find employment. Officials say the program is expected to serve 100 inmates over two years.

Democratic U.S. Representative Chellie Pingree of Maine lobbied for the labor grant. She says the program will help “inmates to ease their transition back into the community and reduce their risk of re-offending.”

The project is funded through the Linking to Employment Activities Pre-Release program and is one of 20 being funded nationwide to offer inmates pre- and post-release job services.
