MONROE, La. (AP) - The state fire marshal’s office says a house fire that killed three Monroe men started in the owner’s bedroom, which held large amounts of cash and drug paraphernalia and was dead bolted from outside.

Deputy Chief Brant Thompson says three other adults pushed out window air conditioners to escape Sunday, but the deadbolt and burglar bars trapped others inside.

He identified the dead as 60-year-old homeowner Charles Harris, who used a wheelchair and Sam Myles, and Jerry Johnson.

Thompson says the other residents say Myles kept all keys, including those to Harris’ bedroom and to bars blocking the door.

One man told investigators that he heard Harris shouting that his room was on fire so he went to get Myles and then escaped. Firefighters found the key in the deadbolt.
