BOSTON (AP) - A Boston man is held on $500,000 bail after pleading not guilty to charges in the hit-and-run death of an 8-year-old girl.

Forty-five-year-old James Horton was arraigned Monday on charges including motor vehicle homicide.

Police allege he was driving a car that struck and killed Yadielys Deleon Camacho and injured her 12-year-old cousin at about 11 p.m. Saturday. The children’s family says they were at their grandmother’s birthday party and were riding bikes.

Witnesses said the driver fled after the car hit a parked car and struck a fence.

Horton’s attorney and his daughter said it was accident.

Both families attended the arraignment.

Yadielys’s mother Yalitza Camacho, carried her daughter’s favorite stuffed animal. The girl’s cousin, 27-year-old Julysa Cordova, said if it was an accident, there was no need for Horton to leave the scene.
