SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Authorities say a police officer was critically injured after he was struck by a tractor trailer as he helped direct traffic at the Port of Savannah.

WTOC-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1GNZNnK ) the Georgia State Patrol said Tuesday it has arrested the truck’s driver on suspicion that he may have been driving while intoxicated.

The State Patrol says Corporal William Solomon was in critical condition at a Savannah hospital after a tractor trailer hit him Monday afternoon at the port’s Garden City Terminal. Georgia Ports Authority spokesman Robert Morris said the officer was coordinating routine traffic operations.

The name of the truck driver was not immediately released.
